1952 100Yen on 2Yen Rose Violet Block of 12 A recent auction by Hong Kong firm John Bull Auctions, Ltd. (catalogs available by mail and, in excellent quality and presentation on the Internet) have offered material of particular importance and lead us to recapitulate the information and illustration here for member's enjoyment! Through the firm's auction (sale) n.296 of 29 October, presented only five Ryukyu lots, n. 1429 was the stunning piece illustrated at left. For reference purposes, we repeat the auction catalogue description: 1429 - 1952 100Yen on 2Yen Rose violet (Scott 17), vertical block of twelve (2x6), neatly canceled by three December 20 Naha dater strikes, with characteristic incorrect "0" in position 11 of the block (position 59 in the sheet), all characters are 9 point Kai Tei; reportedly found in a packet maker's stock and put by for over 50 years, thus a facial scrape on stamp #1 and slight wrinkles on pos. 11 and 12, certainly a showpiece to highlight the very best of Ryukyu collections, probably the largest used block extant. HK $100,000-$120,000. The lot was knocked down to a floor bid of HK $135,000 (approximately $18,000 USD) The piece is certainly the largest block of used n. 17s we are aware of at present and would indeed highlight any collection.
